I tested every teleprompter app for iPhone. Most of them can't hear you.
I’ve spent an unreasonable amount of time with iPhone teleprompter apps - recording videos, filming Reels, and studying what every app on the App Store actually does under the marketing. Quick disclosure before the ranking: I build one of these apps (VoicePrompter), so read my bias into everything and judge by the specifics.
Here’s the finding that should shape your choice: of the 10 most popular teleprompter apps for iOS, seven scroll at a fixed speed you have to chase. Only three listen to your voice at all. “Auto-scrolling” in App Store descriptions means three completely different things:
- Word tracking - real speech recognition follows your actual words. Pause, ad-lib, skip a line, and the script stays with you.
- Sound scrolling - the app scrolls while it hears noise and stops in silence. It has no idea which word you’re on.
- Fixed speed - a motorized crawl. You match the screen, not the other way around.
Fixed speed is why teleprompter reads sound robotic. Nobody talks at a constant pace, and the treadmill doesn’t care.

What I’d actually install
VoicePrompter is the one I’d hand to a creator first - and yes, it’s mine, so here’s the concrete case instead of adjectives. It’s the only app on this list that matches your speech against the entire script: skip a paragraph, tell a story off-script, or restart a sentence from earlier and it finds you - it even scrolls backward, which nothing else here does. It’s also the only one that floats a picture-in-picture prompter over Instagram, TikTok, or any camera app while their camera records you, and it shoots up to 4K in-app when you’d rather stay in one place. Recognition runs on-device in 60+ languages. The free tier includes full voice tracking with three scripts, so you can test my claims against any app below in ten minutes.
Teleprompter.com is the most polished all-platform rival, and its Auto Scroll voice mode is real. The gap shows when you leave the script: it follows you forward but won’t find you if you jump back to redo an earlier line. If you present from iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web interchangeably, it’s a legitimate pick.
PromptSmart Pro invented this category - VoiceTrack scrolls as you speak, holds when you improvise, resumes when you return, all offline. It’s still solid for scripted speakers who read top to bottom. The interface has aged, tracking is hold-and-resume rather than whole-script, and some extras need a second subscription.
VoiceScroll is a promising newcomer built entirely around voice scrolling with live word highlighting. It’s very new, with a small track record and around 11 languages as of mid-2026. Worth watching.
BIGVU deserves a special note because it sounds voice-controlled. Its prompter scrolls at a set speed with a “pause on silence” assist - it hears that you’re talking, not what you’re saying. What BIGVU actually sells is the studio around the prompter: AI captions, eye-contact fix, background replacement, publishing. If you want that pipeline, it’s good software with a basic prompter inside.
The fixed-speed crowd - Video Teleprompter and Teleprompter Pro (both remote-control focused, genuinely good for hardware rigs and operators), VILO (social-media toolkit with captions and an Apple Watch remote), Floating Notes (had the floating-window idea early, but with manual scrolling inside), and Telepromptr (beautifully minimal, no recording, no cloud). All fine at what they claim; none of them listen.
The test that settles it
Don’t take my ranking - run this: put the same 60-second script in two apps. Read it once at your natural pace, pause mid-take to think, and restart one sentence from earlier. With a fixed-speed or sound-based app you’ll be hunting for your line with your thumb. With whole-script word tracking you just keep talking.
I published a longer version of this comparison with per-app verdicts on the VoicePrompter blog: Best teleprompter app for iPhone & iPad in 2026. And if you’re on a Mac, the field looks different - see my Mac teleprompter comparison.

Frequently asked questions
Which iPhone teleprompter apps actually follow your voice?
As of mid-2026: VoicePrompter, Teleprompter.com (Auto Scroll), PromptSmart Pro (VoiceTrack), and newcomer VoiceScroll. BIGVU pauses on silence but doesn't track words; the rest scroll at a fixed speed.
What's the difference between voice tracking and sound scrolling?
Voice tracking uses speech recognition to follow your actual words, so pauses, ad-libs, and skipped lines all work. Sound scrolling just moves while it hears noise - it never knows which word you're on.
Can a teleprompter stay invisible while I record in TikTok or Instagram?
Yes, if it can float over other apps. TikTok and Instagram record from the camera, not the screen, so a floating script never appears in the video. VoicePrompter and Floating Notes can do this.
Is there a free voice-tracking teleprompter for iPhone?
VoicePrompter's free tier includes full voice tracking with 3 custom scripts plus an unlimited demo script, no account needed. Most competitor free tiers watermark video or limit core features.
What's the best autocue app for iPhone?
Autocue is the British term for a teleprompter, so the ranking is the same: VoicePrompter first for its voice-tracking autocue, with Teleprompter.com and PromptSmart Pro as alternatives.
