Beam-splitter rigs with an iPhone or iPad: the setup that finally needs no operator
A beam-splitter is the teleprompter setup that TV uses: a piece of semi-transparent mirror glass angled at 45° in front of the lens, with the script reflected onto it. You read the text on the glass while looking straight into the camera behind it. The eye contact is perfect - not “close to the lens,” but literally through it.

Feature one: mirroring
You’re reading a reflection, so the app has to flip the text horizontally or every word renders backward in the glass. This sounds trivial but plenty of apps bury it or lack it. In VoicePrompter it’s the one-tap Mirroring mode - flip it, drop the device in the tray, done.
Feature two: nobody can touch the screen
Here’s what beam-splitter guides rarely mention: once the device is in the rig, under the glass hood, you physically can’t touch it mid-take. Voice tracking dissolves the whole problem. The five-minute setup
- Mount: camera behind the glass, iPhone/iPad in the tray below it. Level the rig at eye height.
- Load the script: in VoicePrompter, copy it from anywhere and start from the clipboard in one tap.
- Flip: enable Mirroring. Text now reads correctly in the glass.
- Scale: push the font size until it’s comfortable from your speaking distance; set the active-line position near the lens center.

One honest caveat: glass rigs cut a little light to the camera and add reflections to manage - budget ten minutes for angles the first time. After that, it’s the most natural-looking prompting setup that exists, and the one place where an iPad earns its keep most: bigger glass, bigger text, easier reading. If a rig feels like overkill, the floating-window approach gets you most of the way with zero hardware.
